Fun Holiday Drinks

I love making adult versions of our favorite childhood drinks, like hot chocolate. Here are two of my favorite holiday drink recipes, one is a classic Hot Toddy which is one of my boyfriend, Adam’s favorite drinks to make in winter and the other is a spiked Hot Chocolate.   They area easy to make for a party.  Even if you aren’t having a party you can make this for yourself on these chilly winter nights.

best hot chocolate recipe

Cozy Hot Chocolate:

INGREDIENTS: Serves 1

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1 to 2 tablespoons sugar (to taste)

Pinch of fine sea salt

1 cup milk or any combination of milk, half-and-half, or cream.  I use almond milk but it does come out better with regular milk

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 shot of Whipped Cream Vodka or Cake Vodka (you can find this in your market or liquor store) or add 2 shots if you are in the mood

1 cinnamon stick to use as a mixer

Marshmallows (add what you like)

or whip cream if you are feeling extra fun and alcohol whip cream and sprinkle some chocolate on top

Liquor Variation:

You can add Peppermint Schnapps and use a candy cane as a mixer when you serve it. If you want something that’s a little stronger you can add a shot of bourbon, you can use the cinnamon stick with this variation.  If you want to do a s’mores version you can do a graham cracker crust on the rim of your cup, add Frangelico and marshmallows.

If you want to cheat you can easily do this with a packaged hot chocolate mix still make it with milk when making it with a mix. It will taste way better than water.

PREPARATION

Whisk together the cocoa, sugar, salt, and about 2 tablespoons milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until cocoa and sugar are dissolved. Whisk in the rest of the milk and heat it over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until it is hot. Stir in the vanilla and serve. At the end add the shot of alcohol because if you cook it the alcohol will burn out and it won’t have any alcohol content.  Add the cinnamon stick when serving.

If you like it frothy, blend it in the blender.
Tip: When you are making this for more than one person it’s easy  to  add to the recipe. When you get up to a quart of milk, use 1/4 teaspoon salt.

The Hot Toddy

Last winter when my boyfriend Adam and I were living in Istanbul, it was freezing there and when we would come home we would make these all the time.  They also help when you have a cold…

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon honey

½ ounce lemon juice

1 cup hot water

1½ ounce whiskey or rum

Lemon wedge, cinnamon stick

Directions:

Combined the first four ingredients into the bottom of a warmed mug. Then add lemon, and the cinnamon stick

Variation:

You can also make this with tea, I like chamomile tea with it. When you make it with Chamomile tea do the same as above but just make add the tea with hot water and you can add an orange slice and nutmeg for garnish.

I’ll post more fun holiday drink ideas next week. If you have one that you would like me to post leave a comment in the comments.  If you have a recipe you think I would like please post your link!

I made a christmas mix you can download here for free, Coucou Jolie Christmas Mix.  Share it with your friends!  I set it up so you can download the songs you like and you don’t have to download the entire mix.  If you don’t see the download arrow just hover the cursor over the song and it will show up.

If you make any of these holiday drinks let me know how it came out!
