Name: Urbana Chappa
My name is Urbana Chappa and yes that’s my real name haha. I was born in Beeville Texas, I’m half Persian and half Spanish. I have a background in dance, music and design.
City: Los Angeles
Years lived here: 14
I’ve been able to experience so many things over the 14 years I’ve lived here. I danced with a lot of great dancers and choreographers, back up sang for Rah Digga and even acted in a few foreign films as well as styled several celebrity clients. While out here I met my now husband, who was also trying to make it as an artist. My husband’s career moved really fast as he teamed up with this kid named Bruno Mars. My husband began writing songs and performing with him and before you knew it their careers sky rocketed. After a couple of miscarriages we ended up having a healthy baby in Jan of 2010. After the birth of my daughter, I suffered from a very bad case of postpartum where I felt lost. I’ve always loved fashion so I decided to go to FIDM for a change of pace – fast forward 6 months later I started a women’s brand, Maison de Urbana, and debuted the collection at New York Fashion Week! Later that month I was invited to LA fashion week and was a great run. I was on a high to see something I wanted and had passion for come to fruition. A year later I decided to start an organic kids line called Maison de Mini, with allergy friendly designs made from bamboo soy and hemp.
Favorite place for brunch: Sweet Butter
Although I love to cook it’s always nice to have a nice brunch out when you have 4 kiddos.
I love sweet butter in Sherman Oaks. They have the best menu but my favorite is the chicken and waffles – the best best best! I love the atmosphere as well. Another spot I love is home state in Los Feliz. I’m from Texas so breakfast tacos and bbq are a huge thing. This restaurant is owned by a woman from Victoria, Texas where my family still live. She decided to bring Texas famous eats to la – think: Frito pie, queso dip, brisket tacos, egg and bacon and potato tacos and homemade tortillas. It’s so good – I go almost every Saturday.
Favorite place to shop: Online and Zara
I’m so busy with kids and my design business so I like to shop online. Mostly Zara! Even though I adore the higher end stores like Gucci, ysl, etc., I love a good affordable place that is still stylish. Zara has great pieces that can look expensive or just simple, well-crafted pieces that you can stylize with a nice pair of shoes or bag.
Favorite place for coffee, tea, or juice: Coffee Bean
I’m not a coffee drinker but my favorite place for tea is coffee bean. They have the best raspberry tea and the most amazing blueberry muffins.
Secret place: My facialist, who works by referral only
Anyone who knows me knows I’m a sucker for a good esthetician, as I get older my facial regimen is super important! I have tried so many facialist and I finally found the best one – She is my secret place! I see her every two weeks and it’s where I can relax, and rest most times. She doesn’t advertise and is referral based only.
Favorite cheap eats: Kung Pao China Bistro
My favorite cheap eats will have to be Kung Pao bistro in Sherman Oaks. Who doesn’t love Chinese?! They have the best cream cheese wontons and Lo Mein. When I was struggling back in the day it was a place I would eat at a lot.
Favorite place for a drink: Beauty & Essex
I’m not much of a drinker but when I do, I love cool trendy spots. One of my favorite places is beauty and Essex in NYC, so, when they opened one here in LA I was ecstatic. The vibe is so cool and I love the ambiance of the whole place, not to mention the signature cocktails are all amazing.
Favorite outdoor place: My terrace
My favorite place outdoors would have to be my terrace outside my master bedroom. I love to do Pilates out there in the morning. During the fall, I love out there, sometimes we take the kids out there and watch Mary Poppins and eat smores.
If there was one place a tourist had to see where would you recommend: The Hollywood Sign
Hmm this is hard because so many amazing landmarks here. I think for me the Hollywood sign was the highlight for me when I visited LA before moving here!
If I could describe la in one word it would be: Exhilarating
I find this city to be that from the culture, food, people and endless things that you can do and see. This city has inspired me in so many ways.
