San Diego Museum Month

One of my favorite weekend trips is going down to San Diego. It’s a short drive from LA and Orange County and every time I go down there I find a new favorite restaurant or explore a new area. San Diego has Museum Month in February and it’s a great way to visit museums. There are 40 museums that participate in museum month and it’s half off admission for those museums. You can grab a museum month pass for free at any Hilton Hotel in the San Diego Area.

While I was in San Diego I stayed at Hilton Bay Front located just steps away from the Gas Lamp Quarter. This is the second time I have stayed there and love it. The rooms are newly remodeled and it’s in a great location that you can easily walk to restaurants, bars and even the USS Midway which is part of museum month. I love the views from the rooms, there are views of the bay and the city. I also love the breakfast in the hotel, there is something for everyone and even if you are eating healthy you can stick to any type of diet at the breakfast buffet. Next time I visit I need to check out their secret cocktail menu at the bar.

One way to get around San Diego is by Trolley. The Old Town Trolley Tours is a great way to see the city if it’s your first time to San Diego or if it’s your 100th time. The guides are really funny and I love all the fun facts that they share with the group. You can get on and off the trolley if you buy a day pass and it’s a fun way to explore San Diego without having the stress of driving, parking and trying to navigate. You’ll be able to really see the city and enjoy your day without any worry!

When I travel to any city I have to visit museums. I love all museums from art to science. In San Diego go to Balboa Park where you can walk around several museums in a day. With the Museum Pass that gives you access for half off of participating museums you have no excuse to not visit several in a day. I love walking around the Japanese Friendship Garden, it’s really relaxing and a great way to learn a little bit about Japanese Culture. You can sit and relax and take in all the beauty and peace of the gardens.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is great to take kids and the whole family. You can learn about animals that are native to California. Check out their schedule because they do guided hikes, and some of their exhibits include living animals, over 100 gems where you can learn about mineralogy and so much more. It’s a great museum to learn about the different environments and animals in California. There are also a lot of activites for kids. I love it and can’t wait to visit again!

One of my favorite museums is the San Diego Museum of Art. Every time I visit I tell myself I need a whole day there. I could get lost in the art and just really enjoy every painting and exhibit. Even if you are not an huge art fan I highly suggest visiting here. They have guides who can give you a tour and are very knowledgeable about the artist. They also have an app you can download that make the paintings come alive. It’s so cool. I really enjoyed the Bouguereau exhibit and it will be there until March 15th. I am planning to go back down for Museum Month and take my mom who is an art lover. In April there is an exhibit that I have to see which is called Art Alive, it’s not part of Museum Month but I am sure when you visit in February you will want to go back in April too. If you are in Balboa Park for the day a cute place to go for lunch is Panama 66 which is right next to the San Diego Museum of Art. It’s an outdoor cafe with a great selection of food and it’s a pretty place to grab a beer or glass of wine.

After a long day of walking around you deserve the pizza, pasta and a glass of wine or two. We went to Cucina Urbana located in Bankers Hill. Everything we ate was amazing but the star for me of the night was the rigatoni bolognese. I could’ve eaten an entire plate of it alone and I’ve been craving it ever since. I found out they have locations in Orange County so I will have to visit them! Other dishes that I loved was the burrata and heirloom tomatoes, the squash blossoms, and the pizza. Go with friends or your family so you can share all those dishes and try everything. Another cute aspect of the restaurant is their wine shop, you can buy a bottle in the store and drink it at the table.

My second day in San Diego I visited The Living Coast Discovery Center. This is the first time I have visited the Living Coast and it was amazing. It’s a very short drive away from Downtown San Diego it’s located in Chula Vista. The Living Coast Discovery Center is amazing because not only do you have the opportunity to feed sea life but you learn the importance of our coastal environment and how to care for it. They are a nonprofit organization and they really help and give back. There are fun things you can do like feed the sea turtles and sting rays for a small price and it’s worth it. This is a great experience for everyone and it’s a must visit if you are in San Diego.

Another great museum to visit is the USS Midway Museum. It’s an aircraft carrier that was played a key role in the Cold War. It was also the first in a three ship class of large carriers to have an armored flight deck. It was also used in the Vietnam War and was the first American carrier that was ported abroad. There is so much history about the Midway. You can wander around alone, with a guided headset or with a docent. I recommend going with a docent and learning from them because there are a few that were actually stationed on the Midway. Then after your tour you can wander around. A great time to go is the late afternoon so you can catch a beautiful sunset from the deck. You can easily spend 3-4 hours on the Midway. Every time I visit I learn something new and love it. I never get tired of visiting and even if you think you might not enjoy it you will. It’s a place everyone should visit at least once.

Who doesn’t love tacos? If you don’t we can’t be friends. Puesto which is located in the historic Seaport Village, it’s a short walk from the USS Midway and a short walk to the Hilton Bayfront. So if you want to have some great margaritas or cocktails you can just walk to the hotel. These are hands down some the best tacos I have ever had. You have to order the Shrimp Adobada, Mushroom and Filet Mignon which was my favorite. When I come back down for Museum Month in February I will be eating at Puesto again. You also have to order two guacamoles that they have Puesto Perfect and Nogada. Thank me later. I also loved the Ceviche Acapulco. I loved everything I ate and I am glad there isn’t a location in LA because I would be eating there once a week.

Museum Month is a great way to see a lot of the museums and I can’t wait to visit some new ones that I didn’t get to see on this last trip. I can’t wait for February because there are a few I didn’t get to see while I was there. There is a museum for everyones taste and it’s a great weekend trip or destination trip.
